The legitimacy of humor from a theological standpoint is examined and established. Further, the value of humor as a tool in communication is explored and explained. A theological rationale for humor in preaching is provided in this thesis. Humor's use in preaching is validated by its presence in creation, in redemption, in revelation, and in the incarnation. Particular attention is given to the existence of humor in the scriptures, and most notably, to Jesus' frequent use of humor in his teaching ministry. This study deals with understanding the basic essence of humor. The nature of what makes something funny is investigated. Also, the beneficial effects of humor, in life generally, and in communication specifically, are thoroughly considered. This project also offers information about how humor can be used appropriately in preaching. Suggestions on developing a humorous disposition and discovering humorous material are included. In addition, instructions on the delivery of humor are offered. A description of the dangers associated with the use of humor in preaching is also addressed in some detail. Overall this thesis asserts that humor is an aid to effective communication that, when used appropriately by preachers, can enhance the impact and influence of their sermons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130893023182848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:49.997Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:54:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"427f1670-02d6-4685-bf07-838d67825d15","accessControl_ssim":["d0fdd753-a6dd-4935-98f9-89948e46549c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Towards a theological understanding of humor and its implication for pastoral care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:54:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:03:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["97858589-6ecf-4e8f-8d71-4962fc893bbd"],"hasLease_ssim":["09045e01-382a-404f-89c0-848ce921a24b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Brian H Childs"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John M Helms"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral theology","Wit and humor--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Humor was researched from a theological perspective to discover whether it has validity within the context of the church, the faith of the individual, and the ministry of the pastoral caregiver. It considers the ontogenesis of emotions and presents an interdisciplinary survey of theories about why people laugh. The author explicates Freud's developmental theory of humor. The intrapsychic processes related to jokes, the comic and humor, because they are the same as those of dreams, provide another window into the unconscious realm of das Es, das Ich, and das Ueber Ich. The author takes the humorous attitude as an ontological given. She considers human beings to be anthropos gelasiens and/or homo risibilis -- created in the image and likeness of God (Theos Gelasios and/or Deus Risibilis). The project explores Old Testament humor and Jesus' 'strategy of laughter' along with the primacy of humor in the Medieval church. It formulates an integrative model for the use of therapeutic humor in the liberation and development of the Individuating Self. It indicates the types of humor that are most applicable to unfreedom in das Es, das Ich, and das Ueber Ich. Perceiving the Bible as comedy and human nature as Folly assists the therapeutic process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133633899134976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:22:23.901Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:51:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:30:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e467acb8-da4b-4d59-adb1-767bab997594","accessControl_ssim":["da4d7fd5-21e6-4296-8ee5-abb1d00569c9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Humor in the psychotherapeutic process"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:51:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:39:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cec2a691-59b4-4e16-8d9a-423757b680b8"],"hasLease_ssim":["b51a0d79-fc83-406d-abc5-4639bf0d0ed1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Jeri Babinsky"],"year_tesim":["1988"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["George Brennan"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Life","Psychotherapy","Wit and humor--Religious aspects","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper considers the relationship of humor to issues of meaning and purpose in life.
