The evidence was excerpted from the scriptures, from portions of formative theology, from feminist writings in the social sciences, and from three case studies in which various psychotherapuetic models were used in the counseling sessions that demonstrate the impact of the abuse of power. The participants in the research were elders in congregations of the Reformed Church in America where the pastor had served at least ten years.  A questionnaire allowed those elders to rank eight areas of ministry and to give an indication of the health of the pastoral relationship. The thesis is that there is a body of contemporary American poetry which expresses themes that are in harmony with Lutheran theology.  The project includes an anthology of more than one hundred poems by nearly fifty twentieth-century writers organized under a variety of themes consistent with Lutheran theology. They provided data which proved this hypothesis: given the opportunity, ELC-PNG ministers and administrators can realistically reflect their socio-religious situations, accurately describe their needs in ministry and thereby develop continuing education programs to meet those needs. By means of a survey among 1,800 clergy in Minnesota, it was found that many clergy came into ministry from an extreme family system. The criteria to measure this are theological soundness, liturgical consistency, and pastoral effectiveness.  This study includes an overview of cultural and church responses to divorce, a comparison of Catholic and Lutheran theologies of marriage, an exegesis of biblical divorce texts, a local study assessing participants' evaluation of a ritual experience, and a theological discussion applying a theologia crucis and the law and gospel paradigm to the issue.
