A question the thesis poses is what are the challenges of preaching to a university church? Six different university church preachers were interviewed and their answers are recorded and summarized in this work. The project was designed to help the participants understand their personal attitudes about conflict, to develop an awareness of mediation, and to train them to become mediators by using a mediation model. The project involved a pre-seminar test, a conflict management inventory, lectures on the theological and theoretical basis for mediation, role play, and case studies. The method of research includes extensive study of Scripture, church history, and contemporary worship.  Surveys, personal observations, interviews, and workshops were utilized focusing on worship in the Presbyterian Church in America. A survey of Christian and Missionary Alliance (C\u0026MA) pastors and staff was completed in 1998 using the Western Pennsylvania District of the C\u0026MA as a sample. The survey sought to determine the rate of forced exits and factors involved in forced exits. These rates and factors were compared to two previous studies of forced exits (Crowell, 1990, and LaRue, 1996). More than that, asking questions about effectiveness tends to challenge the old way of doing things. If churches have ceased to be effective in making more and better disciples of Jesus Christ, they must ask whether they have become locked into tired and outmoded programs. It is the author's conviction that the era of the program-driven church is passing and the way of the future is to be purpose-driven. There has clearly been a paradigm shift which challenges some of the old assumptions on how we 'do church.' St. Paul's Anglican Church, castle Hill, within the Diocese of Sydney, has embarked on the journey of transitioning from being program-driven to being purpose-driven. Because it is a large church by Australian standards, with a Sunday attendance of close to one thousand adults, the transition has been slow and sometimes painful. Like changing the direction of a large ocean liner it involves some stresses and strains before the vessel is firmly established on its new course. The desirability of moving to the new course must be clearly communicated, and the congregation persuaded that this is consistent with the Bible and God's will. managing the change and caring for the people in the process is equally important. Two issues--the nature of God's Word and the nature of men and women as listeners--supply the theological foundation for listening to biblical preaching or teaching, which is discussed in chapter two. A third chapter surveys the literature of listening, noting especially the limited contributions of sacred writers in contrast to the extensive resources available from secular perspectives. The work includes several tools to help pastors and churches who would like to train their people in listening. These include a discussion of preaching on listening, along with several sermons; a small group study on listening to preaching; and a three hour listening seminar. The final chapter provides a summary of what the author learned through this study and suggestions for training church members in listening. Therefore, it is critical in faith development to create congregational environments that encourage and facilitate choice-making for faith.  One necessary response is to enhance the kinds and frequency of connecting experiences in congregations to provide general encouragement.  The second response is to provide specific reflective learning experiences to help individuals clarify new goals for faith development as well as foster strong personal agency beliefs that these goals are achievable. It then looks at leadership identification and development. specifically within the International Ministries (IM) structure. The research element of the project consists of interviews with thirteen mission leaders, seeking to determine if there is agreement on what a leader is and what his qualities and characteristics should be. The interview also seeks to understand how potential missionary leaders are identified and then developed for future positions on the mission fields. Various conclusions are drawn from the results of the interviews and both general and particular recommendations are suggested for further study or action on IM's part. This process was informed by theological, historical, and biblical materials. The training was evaluated through case study, the use of survey questions, and detailed observation.
