This dissertation seeks to answer questions relevant to how stress affects the lives of students, their spouses, and children. Research utilized a polling instrument and interviews of students at CIU.  The results indicate those who responded handle stress in a generally positive manner.  The major sources of stress were time demands, school work, and finances/debt.  The major symptoms of stress were tiredness, anxiety, and irritability. Unfortunately, churches in transitioning neighborhoods struggle predictably with how best to respond to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by changing demographics.  The project grows out of the experiences of a local congregation, Calvary Reformed Church, Holland, Michigan over an eight year period.  This project shows that is is possible/preferable for an established congregation to embrace a community undergoing economic, ethnic or cultural change. Two areas of research have inspired the author: the biblical principles of Nehemiah, Jesus, and Paul, and the insights of James Kouzes and Barry Posner, from the secular arena. Sixteen persons selected from the congregation participated in a nine-week leadership-training class. Paying attention to those conversations bridges a gap that exists in the congregation, leads to a connection between the preacher/leader and congregation and consequently provides the arena for significant preaching and shared ministry.  This author used methods of research, experience, case study, and conversations with congregational members. This project used case study, historical data, and pastoral and liturgical material from ministry settings following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  The project used a subjective analysis of interviews of professionals and their families who participated in United Methodist churches in New Castle, Indiana, Park City, Utah and Evergreen, Colorado. A woefully inadequate, often dualistic, misreading of Scripture, this assumption has long obscured the symbolic structure of Eucharist.  This Dissertation/Project reorients Christian anthropology within the triadic paradigm of Hebrew and Christian symbolism.  It builds on the 1960's work of social anthropologist Mary Douglas who argued Old Testament Hebrew purity rules and ritual implied a well-defined symbolic system rooted in social organization.
