Ch. 1 introduces the purpose, goals, background and rationale for the project. Ch. 2 investigates the biblical foundations for mentoring, dealing with two Old Testament passages and several New Testament passages examining Paul as a mentor and Jesus as the ideal mentor. Ch. 3 explores historical as well as contemporary models of mentoring. Particular attention is given to the various components of mentoring, levels of mentoring relationships, as well as how mentoring is utilized today inside both religious and secular spheres. Ch. 4 describes each step in the process of implementing the mentoring ministry within a local church. The project director designed and implemented a three-part sermon series and seven-part training course to increase knowledge in the principles and practices of servant leadership.  Participants answered identical pre- and post-course questionnaires and a class assessment form.  Both reading and evaluation teams of educators analyzed the responses. This project rests on the foundations of biblical and historical support for short-term mission experiences, as well as insights from the fields of communication, education, and psychology. The short-term mission training modeled reports on one such experience with a group from First Baptist Church, Springtown, Texas traveling to Saltillo, Mexico. The personal experiences of participants and evaluations by selected ministers provided data for evaluation. This practice has roots in our denominational history, but is not widely practiced in our chucrhes today. The practice of testimony strengthened lay leadership, fostered more intimate community and transformed the congregational culture. This practice led us to be more aware of other practices of the faith. It revitalized worship, and prompted changes in our liturgical life as well. It was also designed to provide a forum and to create an atmosphere in which Christian characteristics could be incorporated into Christian lives.  The project was conducted in the church through twenty-four sermons on Christian character development and character traits found in biblical personalities.  A study group composed of an inter-generational cross section of the congregation participated in twelve studies and three in-home fellowship meetings. Adults gather to reflect and share with one another spiritual topics affecting their lives. In the perspective of the American experience, the elements, benefits, and challenges of small faith groups are described. Research indicates that small faith groups have an impact on the faith life of adults. The spirituality in small faith groups is explored in connection with Franciscan values.
