The foundation for the answer is found in the Biblical teaching that holds the purity of God's church in tension with the growth of God's church. The Bible consistently exhorts leaders to be attentive to both purity and growth, not emphasizing one to the neglect of the other. Only a comprehensive understanding of Biblical teaching can produce a theology of assimilation that guards the church from both extremes. A survey of church history demonstrates the difficulty of maintaining this balance, as the church at times has been too exclusive and at other times too inclusive. An examination of the confessions and creeds of all major denominations reveals a consistent recognition of three criterion that must be met in order for one to be admitted into the full privileges and responsibilities of church life, mainly through the time-honored traditions of church membership and church discipline. These high standards are largely neglected in the North American church today, resulting in a spiritually weak, theologically illiterate, and largely unregenerate church. This dissertation examines the pastoral ministry of Jonathan Edwards as a case study for developing a theology of assimilation. Special attention is paid to the process, rationale, circumstances, and missteps leading up to his dismissal from the Northhampton Church. Practical principles are drawn from this significant event and applied to First Bible Church of Decatur, Alabama."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128453967249408,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:00:03.933Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:15:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:17:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"de775ad3-a738-490e-ae2d-027bf40f6985","accessControl_ssim":["c1ddb89c-10b2-434a-a4e2-0787c1501e13"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Barth and Kohut: an examination of their anthropologies and implications for pastoral counseling"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:15:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:30:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["eaf3314b-b79b-4c8e-9d49-b2cec1cb9348"],"hasLease_ssim":["59ceafcc-8bc3-4039-b3cf-5ff52142f3ad"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Emmanuel Y Lartey"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lewis T Kola"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Anthropology","Theological anthropology--Christianity--History of doctrines","Barth, Karl, 1886-1968","Kohut, Heinz","Theology","Pastoral theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This Project examines the theological anthropology of Karl Barth and the psychological anthropology of Heinz Kohut, and claims the promise of Barth's theology for the practice of pastoral care and counseling. The answer to this question has its roots in both the Old and New Testaments and is played out for us in the historic development of spirituality from the early Desert Fathers, through the Reformation, and into our present time. The focus of this work is that when these areas of study and discovery are opened the average member's spiritual life benefits and the member experiences a closer relationship with the Lord. Analysis of the issue is based on surveys of those who participated in an eleven week course of study covering the development of spirituality and the disciplines historically associated with spirituality. It examines the call to ministry and its importance in carrying out the office of pastor. It considers problem areas and obstacles in the life of a pastor that can cause him to be discouraged, disillusioned or to succumb to moral or financial failure. The study consists of interviews with pastors, wives of pastors, district superintendents, denominational presidents and other ministry leaders. Additionally, the work draws from a host of written material on the various reasons why pastors leave ministry. As a result of the study and interviews, it is concluded that most pastors have a number of perils that they must avoid whenever possible if they truly wish to remain in ministry and be effective therein. The best guideline to follow seems to be the instruction given to Timothy by the Apostle Paul -- '...keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist and discharge all the duties of your office' (2. Tim. 4:5)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130098021171200,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:11.825Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:59:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6a654898-ba56-4625-8782-882490b2ff4d","accessControl_ssim":["04321f81-c850-4e0b-9044-a3b268808f30"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Introducing adults to theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:15:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["085695da-b1bc-42fd-8e00-4b8a53ffa5e8"],"hasLease_ssim":["0bc46149-90f1-4d31-a9bc-8e35a52aa4b0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David A Roozen"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph M Callahan"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Adult education","Theology--Study","Religious education--Teaching methods"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project introduces adults to theology through six one hour classes. The ultimate goal of this investigation is to lead religious seekers to consider the claims of Jesus Christ and to place faith in Him."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132417492254720,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:03:03.845Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2eba4f6d-e056-4fe2-9abe-0d469802dea4","accessControl_ssim":["9351f937-bf4c-4806-8cc5-6da50836e5eb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Re-constructing Biblical worship for postmodern times"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:29:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9b6418dc-79b8-45d2-95c8-1a164fe3c0fd"],"hasLease_ssim":["b6678707-935e-47fc-bed0-06a0cc1a2033"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gary A Parrett"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffry B Iskra"],"keyword_tesim":["Indigenization of worship"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and culture","Postmodernism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The primary concern of this study is the content of American worship services and the appropriate correlation with the present culture. The Church should search for the same position that Jesus embraced -- live in the tension of being in the world, but not of the world. What would a worship model, maintaining this tension, look like? This thesis begins by exploring the fundamental teachings that are forever necessary to Christian worship. The Church's worship must remain thoroughly biblical with Jesus being the center, no matter what cultural setting. This must form the content of worship. Postmodernism contains some values that are in direct conflict with Christianity, and the Church must never compromise on its beliefs. Other postmodern values, such as the desire for community and the search for spiritual meaning provide the Church a great opportunity to express authentic Christianity and influence many. The cultural values help shape the style and the relevance of worship. This thesis examines four worship services from churches that are attempting to incarnate Christianity in a postmoden setting."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130392693047297,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:52.846Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:10:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f34e4f31-96e5-485e-92c5-fba8b1a662fe","accessControl_ssim":["458dfe49-2b4c-45a1-82e9-0578e58e7a72"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Feminism through the back door: a method for teaching feminist theology without calling it by that name"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:13:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:04:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a28749aa-a035-4d9d-9a95-016d2f6223b5"],"hasLease_ssim":["1dae64de-bae6-492a-a1c1-9aa8e2be43df"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Elizabeth Nordquist"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paula Fae Trimble-Familetti"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious attitudes","Feminist theology"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian education--Teaching methods"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this author is that feminist theology can be taught if the word feminist is not used.
