Biblical communication reveals both objective and functional relevance. Objective relevance consists of mechanical and topical relevance. Functional relevance is the use of objective relevance to help listeners connect God's Word with their lives. To communicate relevantly, preachers must: a) comprehend the hermeneutical issues associated with connecting biblical truth with modern life, b) understand the listeners' milieu, c) apply objective and functional relevance techniques, and d) develop systems of intentional feedback. Homiletical and cognate literature confirm the importance of these elements. A preaching course is presented, providing a methodology for establishing relevance."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129972929200128,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:24:12.528Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:05:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:49:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ff9df2f9-c7f7-421c-9c72-c337b4f1c10f","accessControl_ssim":["a88cca7d-2bda-457e-b15d-db4474ae68c1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Old wine in new skins: the blending of traditional and contemporary worship in a mid-sized Presbyterian church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:05:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:26:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["42f50bff-afcb-4c32-8140-b80296276028"],"hasLease_ssim":["2ca95213-2e01-452f-8fba-b78d984db53e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John Burgess"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John C Minihan"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Worship","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is a pro-active case study which seeks to encourage the faithful worship of God through the development of a blended format of worship for the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church in Newark, Ohio. It proposes to find out what is the influence of postmodern thought on the respondents of the questionnaire and what are the implications for pastoral ministry. The research discloses the influence of postmodern thought upon the 109 participants of the survey project. The first chapter is about some current problems in ministry. The second chapter discusses four basic theological principles relevant to the investigation. The third chapter reviews available literature pertinent to the research. The final chapter provides analysis of the survey data, including strategies for postmodern pastoral ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131772453388288,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:48.688Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:05:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:00:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6de8ece6-dd8d-4a39-8753-4e3eae840310","accessControl_ssim":["ffdd9a8f-9511-40b1-bf69-930d1d62be64"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Training Christian professionals for servant evangelism at First Baptist Church of McKinney"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:05:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:21:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a7b29bb6-8ab1-488f-a30a-40ed3c1f7aee"],"hasLease_ssim":["e9116984-e560-400f-8591-6b12b17223d0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Daryl Eldridge"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Elisio C Roza"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Non-church-affiliated people","Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Jesus Christ revealed to His people that 'the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve' (Matt 20:28). Also, the Apostle John challenged the early Christians to 'Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest' (John 4:35). This project is in direct response to these Biblical challenges. The purpose of this project is to mobilize and train Christians with professional skills at the First Baptist Church of McKinney to use their own background as a tool in servant evangelism. The project participants will participate in a five-week seminar in which the project leader will present Sjogren's concept of servant evangelism. Servant evangelism is best understood when Christians perform deeds of love with words of love in adequate time with no strings attached. The project leader will also help participants find a way to connect his or her professional skills with the concepts of servant evangelism, and instruct them in the way to teach a one-day workshop in their area of expertise. It is hoped that the project will help bridge the gap between Christian professionals and the lost people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132265291448320,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:00:38.695Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:05:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:30:54Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"11c10ba7-4a19-4cf6-8641-a1c138a926d9","accessControl_ssim":["0077296f-efaf-4317-8fb6-643f388612b8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Faith formation and evangelism through proclamation and celebration: a review of worship in a mainline Scottish Presbyterian Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:05:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:38:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5410f4fa-8b6d-4588-bc96-c93d7166cb8d"],"hasLease_ssim":["a168a6f9-2d32-4122-acb2-04d28e5928cc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Iain R Torrance","John Burgess"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Andrew G Wilson"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Faith development","Church of Scotland","Evangelistic work","Rubislaw Church (Aberdeen, Scotland)","Worship--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project raised and answered the question Why do people come to Church today, and what do they become by coming? through a worship audit prepared and analysed by the Minister and Kirk Session of Rubislaw Church, Aberdeen; a mainline, professionaly based congregation of the Church of Scotland.
