The legitimacy of humor from a theological standpoint is examined and established. Further, the value of humor as a tool in communication is explored and explained. A theological rationale for humor in preaching is provided in this thesis. Humor's use in preaching is validated by its presence in creation, in redemption, in revelation, and in the incarnation. Particular attention is given to the existence of humor in the scriptures, and most notably, to Jesus' frequent use of humor in his teaching ministry. This study deals with understanding the basic essence of humor. The nature of what makes something funny is investigated. Also, the beneficial effects of humor, in life generally, and in communication specifically, are thoroughly considered. This project also offers information about how humor can be used appropriately in preaching. Suggestions on developing a humorous disposition and discovering humorous material are included. In addition, instructions on the delivery of humor are offered. A description of the dangers associated with the use of humor in preaching is also addressed in some detail. Overall this thesis asserts that humor is an aid to effective communication that, when used appropriately by preachers, can enhance the impact and influence of their sermons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130893023182848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:49.997Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dc12fa26-5717-4804-a902-51f0eb52371f","accessControl_ssim":["e7b995c3-f8e4-4761-8b8a-cf67908ab27d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Bondage, burden, and blessing: preaching in a culture of affluence"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:25:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["50ba70be-a9f9-4b42-a787-c7decccd15fc"],"hasLease_ssim":["b78716e7-fb6e-4b02-b265-2eb8c6a1ec0f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Morris J Niedenthal"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy V Olson"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Preaching","Wealth--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis deals with the theological and homiletical challenges of preaching in an affluent congregation on economic issues like materialism, greed, and giving. It begins by identifying the problem of preachers being ill-equipped and under-prepared for the task of preaching by their formal theological education. More specifically, classical theological education addresses preaching to specific target audiences on only a limited basis. The perspective of this project is that specifically focused preaching enhances the effectiveness of communication. In addition, little has been written and taught regarding preaching to older adults, as opposed to younger generations. Preaching must address the reality that the population of the United States is growing older. This thesis addresses ways to communicate biblical truths to aging adults more effectively. It surveys contemporary literature which addresses issues relevant to the elderly. The project also includes a self-study for preachers who preach regularly, exploring specific themes for preaching, unique characteristics of older adults, ways in which the Bible addresses particular issues faced by older adults, and ways in which preachers can use more inclusive language in the wording of the sermon. Finally, this thesis contains a lesson plan for teaching one particular aspect of homiletics."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131593560031232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:49:58.082Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:31:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"319809aa-bbb9-46ab-ad3d-4958922e1cd5","accessControl_ssim":["0a061e8f-8683-40d2-abc5-0e5d1f711635"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Worship in a symbological world: enhancing Christian worship in an electronic culture"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:34:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["39ab747a-2072-4d04-93c5-6fefea99f530"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa44d7d3-9d66-449a-93c9-895b63c94801"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Wayne Goodwin"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Vincent A Gappa"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Mass media in religion","First Wesleyan Church (Greenville, SC)","Worship--Comparative studies"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The emergence of new electronic technology combined with an accelerated rate of societal change has given birth to a new consciousness characterized by the primacy of visual image, symbology, and a new understanding of the human self. This new consciousness has affected the Christian church, specifically the ministry of worship. This project used contemporary multimedia tools in the worship environment of First Wesleyan Church in Greenville, South Carolina for two primary purposes: the unification of the worship experience, and the relevant engagement of electronic culture through worship. The author used an 'experimental' model of research. After surveying the congregation he developed several ongoing experiments designed to discover how electronic technology impacts the theology and practice of Christian worship in a Wesleyan context. Based on these experiments, the author discovered that thoughtful usage of certain multimedia tools enhanced the worship experience of the majority of individual worshipers in the congregation. Moreover, the author found that what he calls True Multimedia involves an integration of tool and content in a way that offers a new dimension in worship experience. When video, audio, and computer data are combined with the elements of worship - music, prayer, and proclamation - they form a multimedia which conveys a fresh substance. That substance develops when church leaders grasp a clear biblical theology of worship as foundational to the thoughtful use of electronic technology."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130416192684033,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:31:15.257Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:54:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9ec4fead-02e0-40d2-b385-f13baa64353e","accessControl_ssim":["0347f795-1a49-4b84-88dd-e25fe68f5a14"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a healthy prayer life"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:46:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["687da3b3-37e9-4bb4-8b22-5c68f36ccf94"],"hasLease_ssim":["ae9aeb7c-90f0-4931-8c9b-0995ab7828af"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard F Lovelace"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Casiday H Warren"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Prayer--Psychology","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Most Christians have received little training in the art of prayer. As a result, their prayers are often anemic, unbalanced, unhealthy, and tend to be self-focused in nature. It is a premise of this thesis that there is a healthy way that Christians can pray. Healthy prayer is a balance between self-focused and God-focused prayers. This thesis demonstrates through its various constituent prayer projects that healthy prayer can be taught to Christians through a variety of structured prayer programs that included an accountability component as well as structured learning opportunities. Furthermore, this thesis confirms that growth towards a healthy prayer life is measurable. This thesis proposes that Christians who attempt to adopt the healthy prayer life model into their prayer lives will grow spiritually and can become instruments of change within their church and the kingdom of God because their prayers are being directed by the Holy Spirit."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131858059132928,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:10.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:44:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6f2ac315-a446-4788-a437-61a30e113e4a","accessControl_ssim":["ca7b7a02-7f59-41b3-8d39-297dc37c5ecc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leading and nurturing the broken church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:23:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["99b6375a-7733-4b0f-b0a2-58f1eff8369a"],"hasLease_ssim":["5d94e140-9b5c-43e4-b644-19702159ea8a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth L Swetland"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael W Glidden"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work is a study focused on building the foundation for a healthy church. There are many churches today throughout the world that cannot grow because of either a lack of leadership or nurtured environment or both. This is a major concern because of the decrease in membership experienced by most denominations. My primary premise is that a healthy church will not grow unless it has a strong lay leadership and a nurtured laity. Churches today are trying many gimmicks to grow a healthy church. They are doing whatever they can to add to their numbers. Others are trying various means to increase financial giving. Though these may be noble means, there needs to be a foundation in order to begin. My thesis project begins with a short history of the church in which I serve. I will provide my theological basis, literature review, and incorporate projects that I have given to various groups within the church. It is my aim that my project will be a useful resource for a pastor to use who is experiencing the same troubles that I had when I inherited a dysfunctional but hopeful pastorate."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131232818429952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:44:14.052Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2e853dd7-a458-4016-a9d6-cd1fe6ed3f8f","accessControl_ssim":["e2772875-2600-427a-b777-5fd67ca397c3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["International churches as launching pads for mission to indigenous peoples"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:29:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5e3dc921-d485-4068-b0ee-e97086527e97"],"hasLease_ssim":["182d74c3-ea54-4feb-b8db-e1e30b46b537"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David Pederson"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dan P Bowers"],"publisher_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelistic work","International Christian Fellowship of Caracas","Missions"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["International churches that minister primarily to expatriates living abroad have the potential to become launching pads for mission to indigenous peoples. Methods: The author conducted a case study of the International Christian Fellowship of Caracas and a survey of forty-two other expatriate ministries in order to evaluate the missionary potential of international churches. Included is a theological and theoretical search for a model of expatriate ministry that can be used in outreach to indigenous peoples that leads to the planting of a national church. Conclusion: Because many of the approximately 1,000 international churches are involved in outreach to indigenous peoples, and because some have planted national churches, they should be considered as an alternative approach for mission to the middle and upper classes in the major cities of the world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133395442466816,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:36.491Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13083,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":46,"label":"Dissertation"},{"value":"Thesis","hits":9,"label":"Thesis"},{"value":"D.Min.
