This project examines how certain practices influence the congregation's subsequent hearing of the sermon. Rooted in the cultural-linguistic theory of religion, the author briefly critiques traditional reformed homiletics and presents preaching as one practice in a network of practices. The aim is that through study and practice of the Lord's Supper, a dialogue will take place that recognizes and respetcs differences without breaking the bonds shared around the table.  Research included readings on the Lord's Supper, ritual, mediation, and also quantitative research provided through feedback from a class taught using the readings. They find little comfort and identification in scripture once they have given up the quest for children because in scripture the barren woman eventually receives God's blessing, conceives, and bears a child. This project reviews the situation of biblical women, the texts in which barren women appear, and the possibility of reframing the idea of barrenness in a way that is helpful and supportive. A survey of such women provides beneficial detail. This project focuses upon the value of funeral sermons that integrate personal stories with biblical proclamation. Why this is important and how this can be done are both explored, along with practical suggestions for gathering stories through carefully facilitated family interaction and active listening. Surveys, interviews, observation and experience are utilized along with research regarding appropriate homiletic usage of these stories. This project discusses some cultural issues underlying those debates and describes an experiment in seeking to revitalize Reformed worship through personal piety among church leaders within a particular congregation. Characteristics of culture and worship at the beginning of the twenty-first century are explored and contrasted with characteristics of Christian worship that intentionally seeks to embody an alternative culture. The official formulations of Presbyterian doctrine have failed to produce a unity in the church that endures. The project listens to the circumstance-limited testimony of a group of Presbyterian pastors to discern from that speech an operating doctrine of the church in our time.
