The project director used the strategy-planning model to design and implement the project.  The program included a two-hour membership class and a six-week mentoring assignment.  Each new member was assigned a mentor based on age and marital status.  Adult new members will acquire a greater understanding of church theology and philosophy with a membership class. The project sessions began with an introductory meeting to discuss what the classes would entail.  The deacons then participated in six training sessions lasting one and one-half hours each.  An eighth and final session was held to review and answer any questions that had arisen during the implementation of the project.  The training materials for these sessions were developed to meet the specific needs of life crisis events in the Centreville community. Called EAGLE Forums, these monthly sessions would focus on personal and professional development in the areas of leadership, conflict management, and accountability. Participants in the training surveyed and contrasted current leadership styles in business and churches in order to lead their small groups to identify and improve their approach to pastoral leadership. Church conflict issues and the biblical response to conflict were investigated and addressed. The instrument was designed and field-tested with five UTS instructors during the 1999 spring and fall semesters, involving six student video projects. Results of the model were examined via personal interviews. GROUP used Gathering, Resources, Opportunities, Understandings, and Participants as key ingredients in eradicating the damaging effects of racism on African American males between the ages of 15 and 19. The research was done at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois. Religious belief systems of African Americans informed the process. A group of twelve diverse participants received mentoring, tutoring, and empowering throughout the project. Seven mentors, training classes, a twelve-weeks Rites of Passage program, and a graduation celebration was done. Pre- and post-test questionnaires were used. This study of pre- and post-residents in treatment for substance abuse was evaluated through qualitative analysis. The results show that participants and community residents alike were empowered and transformed during the implementation of the ministry model. The field study revealed that spirituality is a significant factor in the recovery process toward healing and wholeness.
