Culture and religion have imposed on women a 'necessity' to endure violence at home. Self-help groups seek healing and self-awareness for these women, based on their personal experiences and on an examination of the 'addictive' nature of Japanese society. The project applies these tools in studying one Methodist congregation near Sacramento, California, and six Presbyterian congregations in the Seattle area between 1992 and 1996.
