Lack of foreign missionaries during much of this time left Estonian Methodism with a strong, indigenous leadership, but it has also inherited an indefinite ecclesiology and an incomplete understanding of the sacraments, which have issued in confusion of identity. The project conducts interviews with 15 pastors in two focus groups and distributes a questionnaire completed by 426 laypersons. The project finds that residents see staff as a definite resource for spiritual well-being, not limiting this role to clergy. Women clergy are more likely to address the issue because of specialized training in graduate courses, conferences, workshops, or seminars on domestic violence. Participants in 12-step programs register a score significantly higher statistically on representations of God as Loving than do those in Rational Recovery. Participants in Rational Recovery and other nonspiritual groups tend to score significantly higher on representations of God as Wrathful.
