The project analyzes each text with particular attention to its point of entry into the discussion: does the text use Scripture to interpret experience or experience to interpret Scripture? J B Phillips's Your God Is Too Small offers guidelines for development of adequate models and a critical understanding of inadequate models. As people outwardly respond to the grace of God in a worship service, they meet God in a profound and transformational way, more deeply than they would if they had only responded inwardly. The project initiated an invitational ministry time during Sunday morning worship of Memorial United Methodist Church and Patton United Methodist Church in Franklin, North Carolina. The project develops a ministry team manual based on a Vineyard-style prayer method and trains members to participate in this invitational prayer ministry. During the four Sundays of Advent, 1996, 201 persons responded to this ministry. They report finding love, peace, comfort, joy, and encouragement in the ministry time experience. Four such congregations, each more than 30 years old, have grown from an average worship attendance of fewer than 80 to an average of more than 125 within a 10-year period. The project devises and administers a Turnaround Church Survey for use in interviewing pastors and lay leaders in these congregations. Based on research that brought together three manifestations of the Law and Gospel paradigm and American individualism, the project prepares four sermons that illustrate the use of the paradigm in preaching to individualism. Focus groups provide critical responses to each sermon. Applying criteria for authentic expository preaching derived from biblical and current literature to 14 sample sermons prepared by seven Korean Seventh-day Adventist preachers, the project determines that only two of these sermons are expository. Participating clergy recommended that a core course in sexual ethics should be included in all ministerial training programs and that seminars or programs should be initiated to assist ministers already in pastoral practice. New and transferring pastors should be screened for potential sexual difficulties and should be asked to participate in an orientation process. Previous SDA evangelism in Jamaica has successfully reached poor and working people, but it has been ineffective in contacting and attracting the upper classes. The project suggests that 'intentional ministries'--any social ministry, instrument, or program designed to make a deliberate impact within the local community--can be used to contact upper-class people and make personal evangelism possible.
