It contrasts that to the current membership loss in United Methodism.  Ministries that stimulated 19th century growth included the class meeting, wilderness camp meetings, and the work of the circuit rider. By adapting aspects of these ministries in today's context, United Methodism may stem her membership decline and experience renewal.  The project encourages the recovery of spiritual and social accountability among United Methodists. The model involves the pastor and a lay team in two sessions to identify the narrative of the church's story.  A survey solicits information and stories from a cross-section of the church membership.  The project showed positive results in that teams from four congregations participated and indicated that they did enjoy, relish and learn from the congregation's stories of life and faith and were helped to discover a number of factors which form a congregation's identity. In the model a district superintendent develops a supportive pastoral relationship with three clergypersons.  They engage in a process of identifying their personality types, sharing their life journeys, and working with the superintendent to develop a performance covenant to move them to effectiveness.  This is part of a larger design in which the district superintendent is viewed as the bonding agent for vitalization in the United Methodist Church. Developed by the Episcopal Church as the 'Alabama Plan,' subsequently revised, and tested in two United Methodist churches, this model involves congregants in a stewardship event whereby they identify, share and revise their personal stewardship stories in the light of Scripture study and therein make their personal stewardship decisions. Standard church renewal efforts have not moved the congregation from a numerical and financial plateau.  This study describes how standard Presbyterian polity processes failed to provide for an open and honest dialogue with the congregation which can develop shared vision.  This study describes how the processes of self-assessment and education worked to produce shared vision. Many of these students become actively involved in the life of the church throughout the period of their study.  However, many others do not.  This project presents a strategy for integrating students into the life of a church.  Mentoring provides an ideal model for involving an entire congregation in ministry to and with students.  Based on a theological framework and using lessons learned from history, demography and ethnography, a three-pronged model of mentoring (visitation/evangelism, mentoring and hospitality) is developed.  The model was tested successfully in Knox Presbyterian Church, Toronto, found next to the University of Toronto.  The study is in three parts.  The first is a theoretical and analytical basis for a programme of mentoring. The second provides a practical manual for establishing a mentoring community in a local church. The method of research was to train a group of volunteers in skills for confronting inactive members and evaluate the effectiveness of the training with a pre-test and post-test.  The contacts were evaluated by sending a survey to those contacted.  The project resulted in 24 percent of the members returning to church at least once. Each banner constructed was based upon a biblical theme.  Ideas for the banners originated from a hospital advisory committee along with chapel participants.  The method of study consisted of two questionnaires used to gain feedback and opinions from the chapel participants.  Chapel services were divided into a pre-visual aid series and a visual aid series.
