By examining Puritan and Indian relations in seventeenth century southern New England, this study demonstrates that Puritan theology fostered attitudes and a government policy destructive of Algonquin people in New England. The failure to develop a just policy toward Native Americans in turn brought Puritan theology into conflict with itself and hastened the collapse of Puritan rule. This study presents the Puritan theological methods used to foster a 'negative myth of the Indian' in New England."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133751098474496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:15.671Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:11:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:26:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"651f55aa-fc1a-4f0f-854a-486baa9fe804","accessControl_ssim":["fe29735f-ea55-44ab-a030-608275ed3382"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Making preaching participatory between pulpit and pew"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:11:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:05:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["70ba3e9a-ff62-44bb-9a2b-ca907c0af035"],"hasLease_ssim":["21c7b40a-7c27-4d68-95b4-0151f0be9a82"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Erskine Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert G Hall"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Norman T Holloman"],"publisher_tesim":["Erskine Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Baptist","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of the dissertation is that preaching should be a participatory activity to be experienced by congregation and minister. Major symptoms included declining attendance, financial deficit, internal discord, and low morale.
