This need is specifically manifested in regards to the nature and function of lay elders.  Through historical and biblical research the author developed a basis for designing educational and guidance resources to be used in aiding lay elders to serve effectively in their congregation.  The result is a twelve-month study guide (leader's and learner's) for education in the nature and duties of lay elders and a calling guide to aid lay elders in making calls in specific situations which may relate to the congregational office. It is part of Project Cathedral supervised by the the Center for Christian Leadership of Dallas Theological Seminary.  It consists of a biblical study of Moses, a search of recent periodical literature, an analysis of Credibility by Kouzes and Posner, and case studies of two senior pastors. The case studies reviewed church documents, performed on-site observations and employed a questionnaire and the Personal Profile System (Performax).  The hypothesis was validated. Four cyclical classes, each addressing one of the areas noted and operating autonomously, were developed to provide the new member with immediate access to the assimilation process. A study in the book of Acts, a literature search on church planting models and plans, a questionnaire and two case studies demonstrated the effectiveness of the model. The small groups were expanded to become a meta-church model in September 1993 with the evaluation ending April 1994.  The thesis (using empirical research) was to show that the meta-church model would have immediate and long-term qualitative and quantitative effects upon the church.  The results of the program and research included 4 small groups with 43 adults increasing to 11 with 101 adults, with an increase from 42 percent to 81 percent participation in April 1994. The hypothesis was that couples would experience a greater degree of marital satisfaction after having participated in the program. Eight engaged couples participated in the program which was developed by the author.  Each of the couples took the PREPARE marital inventory at the beginning (pre-test) and end (post-test) of the program to measure the progress of the couples and the effectiveness of the program.
