It makes a shift from factors that lead the church to be pastor-centered and also lead pastors into the hierarchical form of leadership ministry.  The initial chapter examines the foundational notions of Christian spirituality, of leadership, and of the laity.  The second chapter reviews the biblical definition and models of the church as the community of faith.  The third chapter explores the mission as evangelism, Missio Dei, liberation and inculturation, and reflects the ministry of all Christians. Its theological justification comes from the fact that pastor and laity alike share in the shepherding ministry of Jesus Christ in the church.  To both equip my present lay shepherds in the 'basics' of pastoral care and to motivate them to train, in turn, still more shepherds, I proceeded as follows: I led ten of these lay shepherds through a series of eight 'shepherding seminars' on the biblical/theological justifications for giving pastoral care; the four 'givens' of human life; the ten stages of grief; the differentiation of different types of depression; and the development of empathetic listening skills. At the conclusion of these studies, each of the now 'trained' shepherds was assigned some aspect of the aforementioned topics and asked to teach it to a small cadre of 'untrained' shepherds newly recruited from the congregation at large. The dissertation addresses a crucial question: How can the Pentecostal faith be perpetuated in the most effective way?  The proposed model for Pentecostal Christian formation is grounded in the community of faith paradigm espoused by John Westerhoff. It utilizes the spiritual and liminal power of the Pentecostal worship service for transformation and formation.  It exploits committed and caring relationships in a covenant community.  The model for Pentecostal Christian formation is supported by a major discussion of how Pentecostals know God (epistemology). To clarify the author's views, the work of six theologians across their denominational persuasions was studied.  The study revealed that published positions of the theologians did not differ as much as current practices among various churches.  After a biblical study on the Holy Spirit and the selected literature of the theologians had been reviewed, the author wrote an essay presenting his own views enriched by this study.  The mainline churches and the new Pentecostal churches need each other, so that no aspect of the work and nature of the Holy Spirit will be neglected or over-emphasized. What is needed is balance and openness. We especially need an understanding that the Holy Spirit shapes the church and not the church the Holy Spirit. Seven individuals were trained to teach in three designated religious groups.  Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism and the New Age movement were studied through lectures, field trips, audiovisual materials, private research and personal interviews.  The seven individuals trained seventy others within the context of two Associational Interfaith Witness conferences. Calvary Baptist Church is the project's feature and the goal will be to develop a plan for growth that will assist the church in her faithfulness to the Great Commission of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: to go, to preach, to teach, and to make disciples of all persons. Designing a two-year church growth plan will include the investigation and incorporation of a stream of church growth resources. Theologically, the plan for church growth must be built upon a solid biblical bedrock.  Studies must be made of the church and community to determine the demographics of the areas targeted.  Methods must be discovered and discernment made as to their feasibility for application to this ministry setting. Finally, a plan will be designed and an evaluation of the plan will be offered, to critique all that has been discovered and suggested as a means for church growth to occur. A descriptive inventory was administered in the spring of 1991 to all the senior pastors of the 181 churches in the Minnesota District of the Assemblies of God.  The resultant data were analyzed for frequency distribution for all variables, and correlations were computed for all independent variables with each dependent variable. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons have been placed into the role of the bearer of sexual shame and have been the object of projection, discrimination, and prejudice.  Through the use of structural family therapy, combined with concepts from various family systems theories and object relations theory, homophobia in the church is analyzed.  This analysis leads to a theology and psychology of liberation, empowering lesbian/gay/bisexual and heterosexual persons to change the structures of homophobia into structures of liberation.  Through 15 in-depth interviews this project relates the experiences of persons in a liberation worshipping community in New Hampshire. A survey questionnaire was used to assess the churches' and ministers' involvement in the pastoral care of adoptive individuals and families.  Survey results indicated that the ministers' and churches' involvement is limited and adoptive families have a need for pastoral support.  Consequently, as a model of pastoral care, the author recommends that ministers and churches incorporate an 'adoption ceremony' to embrace, celebrate and witness the family's adoptive identity.
