It is based on interviews of six women and two men, aged 30 to 50, who are survivors of childhood abuse. This study indicates that beliefs which are most conducive to recovery are those that affirm the survivor's own goodness and power. In terms of God image, the most significant shift was from an external God-person to an internal God-experience. Several religious themes were examined including: suffering, free will, evil and forgiveness. Those beliefs which affirmed freedom of choice and responsibility were most helpful to recovery."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133132309659648,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:14:25.548Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:30:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:26:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b073574c-0607-4275-8d34-cf83b6d251b2","accessControl_ssim":["35fefef3-678e-4ac0-b0bc-c671733d8e16"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Unfolding the wings of the heart: healing the father wound and reclaiming intimacy between men"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:30:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:13:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["40c1f94e-d1e8-466f-b809-952d59740b14"],"hasLease_ssim":["1ffdbe3b-6dcc-460e-8e8f-a1d312036427"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Brita L Gill-Austern"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Philip L Joudrey"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Fathers and sons","Men","Intimacy (Psychology)","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author develops an argument linking blocked intimacy in men's relationships with other men to unresolved grief. A theoretical structure is described, identifying this grief as a response to men's early developmental experience of lack of a father figure with whom to identify. The author proposes that through a conscious grieving of the loss inherent in this early experience, men may have greater capacity to engage in relationship. The argument is developed through literature review, self-in-relation theory and attachment theory. Excerpts from interviews illustrate the author's thesis and a theological grounding is developed for the analysis and healing. Through research and field application, this project provides cognitive information leading to learned coping skills that will help ministers to avoid abandonment and ministry, family and faith. A cognitive map of burnout and recovery describes sources and processes of harmful stress and motivational stress.
