The project argues that a key to skill's competence is attention to the basic communication issues of identity and anxiety/uncertainty. The project follows a praxis-theory-praxis approach.  It begins with the local theology and intercultural communication tensions of the church of Adelaide, South Australia.  These correlate with social perspectives and communication theories giving rise to theorems and face work that leads to fifteen skills.  A spirituality (from Mark's gospel) sustains such ministry.  Held together by the shared praxis approach of Thomas Groome, the project has four main methodologies.  One is Robert Schreiter's method for constructing local theology. Two are from the area of intercultural communication competence: William B Gudykunst's method of anxiety/uncertainty management and William R Cupach's \u0026 T Todd Imahori's identity management theory. A structure for pastoral councils, based on the centrality of baptism, must recognize the right of parishioners to set the vision and the responsibility of the staff and various organizations to realize the vision.  The role of the pastor is presider; liturgy being a paradigm.  This design removes the parish council from the concept of a board of directors setting policy. He interviewed the pastors, leaders, and focus groups of men to gain clear perspective regarding the philosophy, programs, and needs of men in today's world. To get at these two questions, this dissertation looks at Karl Barth's understanding of Christian vocation, and some of the cultural forces which press up against that understanding. The project utilized Howard Clinebell's theory of spiritual well-being, Charlotte Davis Kasl's theory of empowerment, Carol Ochs' understanding of feminist spirituality, and the 12-Step and various alternative recovery models in addressing spiritual idolatry.  The project was conducted in a sixteen-week out-patient aftercare program involving seven clients. Spiritual well-being was measured by a test-retest method using the Spiritual Well Being Scale developed by Craig Ellison and Raymond Paloutzian, the Keirsey and Bates Personality Profile, and Howard Clinebell's Relational Well Being Surveys.  The findings supported the thesis that spirituality is a central issue in the prevention of relapse. A design for a continuing education workshop for nursing home administrators was developed, tested, and evaluated.
