Leader and couple manuals were developed.  Besides study and research, the director drew upon his own personal experience and knowledge of Hispanic culture.  The training was carried out through pre-retreat examinations and questionnaires, a three-day training and enrichment retreat, and follow-up evaluations. The director of the project prepared the training material which presented evangelism as a process rather than as a point of decision.  Following an eight-hour training clinic, fifteen pastors and church leaders returned to their congregations to conduct a six-week training program.  This training involved discovering circles of influence, intercession, repairing broken or unhealthy relationships, counseling, and keeping a daily journal of witnessing contacts and intercessory prayer requests.  A pre- and a post-training survey as well as weekly reports from participants were used to measure the increase in the number of witnessing contacts and the development of new relationships. The six-week application phase included supervised ministry with evaluations of relational and leadership skills. There are several reasons why a pastor might embark upon such an endeavor.  The fastest growing ethnic population in the Southwest is Hispanic.  Large numbers of middle class Hispanics are, for all practical purposes, unchurched. These are but two of them and they are compelling.  The paper explores four areas of Anglo-Hispanic relations relative to the mainline Protestant church: Anglo-Hispanic relations in the American Southwest; how some congregations have been able to make themselves attractive to Hispanics so the Hispanics would take membership in their congregations; a 'how to' pamphlet telling interested pastors what steps to take to integrate their congregations; and, reflections on the theological implications of such evangelism. As background, Chapter 2 offers an overview of machista and societal oppression which Hispanas have endured for centuries.  Chapter 3 reviews models feminist scholars have offered for liberating biblical texts and stories from patriarchal oppression.  The critical components explored are: denunciation, annunciation, proclamation, reclamation, and celebration. Chapter 4 describes the Hispanic women's church setting and presents a methodology for study and reflection.  Chapter 5, the focus of the total project, examines the live of six biblical women who experienced the liberation of Jesus. Chapter 6 reviews God's option for the voiceless and marginalized and presents their cry as the cry of God. It was born out of the unique conquest of the Aztecs by the Spaniards who freely intermarried with the indigenous.  Called a master symbol by Eric Wolf, Guadalupe embodies the ancient Aztec symbols with the Christian faith in the person the Blessed Virgin Mary, who initiated the New World tradition by requesting a church built to her honor.  The poor native, Juan Diego, was her spokesman. The design provides participants an opportunity to get acquainted, worship, see a video on a issue of public concern--in this case, the United Nations. They are instructed on how to write an official about their views, then they do that.  In addition to discovering that the program was workable, the author found that people will take the time to contribute to peace if they are shown how. The author also examined and reflected on the thought of Juan Luis Segundo and Reinhold Niebuhr, offering, too, his rationale for Christian involvement in the public arena. Preparing to preach within the context of numerous other pastoral duties can make it difficult to see past the coming Sunday.  At times, this limited vision may create a feeling that Sunday sermons have little connection from week to week.  This project is designed to bring cohesiveness to the preaching task. By creating a sense of direction and purpose over a year's time, preaching can be seen not as a series of isolated events but integral parts of an overall plan. Examination of the Christian year and lectionary and the impact these interdependent entities have on preaching provide a framework for the preaching planning guide.  Chapters 1 and 2 respectively look at the history, development and current status of the Christian year and lectionaries. In chapter 3, the limits and benefits of allowing the Christian year and lectionary to drive preaching are presented and evaluated.  A six-step planning guide is the basis of chapter 4.
