While personal evangelism is needed for penetration, mass evangelism is needed for impact upon an increasingly impersonal urban society.  A study of the methods of the early church, and the nineteenth and twentieth century church indicated that evangelism was most fruitful when both methods were employed.  The author attempted to restore the impact-penetration balance in his church's evangelistic ministry by leading it to conduct an outdoor evangelistic crusade. The nature of this study included selecting members from a church congregation and teaching them principles about prayer.  The study combined this information with leadership principles and equipped the study group to become leaders in this area in the church. The selected group now serves as a model group for the practice of prayer in the church. The evolution demonstrates a marked shift in meaning from the experience of the Apostles to the use of the terms in today's context.  The shifts are positive because they once again call the laity and the church community to mission and evangelization.  This project focuses especially on the role of the RCIA sponsor. Sponsors serve as examples of lay persons recognizing the call to mission and evangelization.  They are a group in need of formation in mission and evangelization.  The educational design for RCIA sponsors focuses on the role of the lay person and the community in mission and evangelization, and also provides an opportunity for the sponsors to experience the tie between their actions on behalf of the candidates as well as the action of the community.
