Powerful sociological, economic, cultural, technological and historical factors all shape and influence the ministry of the church. At the same time, the church 'in' the world is also the church not 'of' the world. Neither sectarian retreat nor a wholesale sellout of the church's otherworldy agenda of ministry to accommodate the world are viable options. Instead a new vision and understanding of what it means to be 'in' not 'of' is desperately neded by both the church and the world. The purpose of this study is to describe the ethos and worldview of a typical mainstream baby boomer congregation and to offer an alternate response to the American context. The author presents the biblical rationale and theological underpinnings to support his notion of the public community of faith that exists 'in' the world for the sake 'of' the world. Central to this model of congregational life and ministry is a strong belief in the doctrine of two kingdoms and the ensuing paradox of discipleship and faith."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129247908102144,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:41.093Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:18:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e46ed20c-913d-4eee-8b41-fe02cf71e50d","accessControl_ssim":["b3224c99-9908-4b18-9a08-5abdc1c508ee"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A design for a church history curriculum for adults"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:40:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7e0ce900-9676-4aba-9ee3-bf99dc5f0675"],"hasLease_ssim":["b75c56aa-d847-405e-afbb-c901c0de97d6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Oscar Hussel"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["S Donald Fortson"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curricula","Church history--Study and teaching","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["There is a general lack of knowledge among laypeople of both the facts and the significance of Christian history. The project concludes that the insights of liturgical theology can provide a basis for a thorough evaluation of a congregation's eucharistic life, and can help develop a comprehensive program for eucharistic renewal. The first section of the project develops a foundational basis in liturgical theology by reviewing and analyzing the approaches of five representative scholars. The second section uses these insights to interpret the practice of Eucharist in a particular liturgical context. Based on the evaluation of this context, the third section proposes a model for eucharistic renewal. The crunch and crisis of daily living is taking its toll on the religious as well as the non-religious. This adult study manual is designed to achieve two goals. First, there is a non-technical description of the dynamics of stress and its impact on the human body, mind, and spirit. Second, the material helps the reader understand that a practical application of Christian principles aids the prevention of chronic stress and promotion of mental health. The basic theological assumption is that the Christian faith is an absolute necessity for restoring human wholeness and wellness, and that Christian education is a practical means of promoting mental hygiene. The primary thrust of the manual is to demonstrate that as believers rely upon resources of divine power and apply the practical 'life principles' exemplified and taught by Jesus Christ, they receive grace, wisdom, and strength from God to emerge as victors rather than victims."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135367490961408,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:49:57.183Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7b793d85-9077-47b7-b9a2-2274ce77aa43","accessControl_ssim":["b6031a43-af83-4d0b-9f4a-0ee3a6e906ad"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Object relational and theological perspectives on duality in pastoral counseling relationships"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:46:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f6f8290b-70e5-4c43-87dd-80982e4d58bb"],"hasLease_ssim":["dadb0444-ec79-4e0f-ae94-837aa8dc2a60"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ralph L Underwood","Laura B Lewis"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Burt L Burleson"],"keyword_tesim":["Pastoral counselors and clients"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Laity","Object relations (Psychoanalysis)","Pastoral theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Duality in counseling relationships is a concern today in the counseling community. Those who counsel in institutional settings in particular are struggling with the need and/or the opportunity to counsel those with whom they have some other role. This is especially true for the individual who offers counseling within the bounds of the local church community. A minister in the local church setting has many roles in the life of a congregation. With these diverse roles in place, church members and others in the community turn to the minister for counseling. The project is intended to shed light on duality and offer guidelines for the pastoral counselor who does counseling in the immediate context of the local church. The issue of duality is studied from the perspectives of object relations theory and pastoral theology. The project examines counseling and other pastoral relationships from the object relations perspective, highlights the importance of duality in pastoral ministry, and offers specific guidelines for persons who are counseling within the local church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135257177620480,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:11.979Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:20Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:11:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6abda149-cc79-4286-93f3-0a42223ec0f5","accessControl_ssim":["6ff058aa-f335-433c-a41b-60cceec26b2f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Where have all the pastors gone? a theology of pastoral visitation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:15:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1ca51ba5-c71b-498a-b5d1-1877c3b4e8f8"],"hasLease_ssim":["d28c9b15-e092-44d5-95b3-545a6709aac2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Andrew Purves"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William M Johnson"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Visitations (Church work)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores and affirms the importance of pastors reclaiming visitation. Aggressively taking advantage of the privilege of being invited into people's homes and lives, the author explored Scripture, tradition, and church history to understand the importance of pastoral visitation. Questionnaires were sent to pastors and clerks of session on Long Island to understand their involvement in various areas of pastoral ministry. Nine months were spent in visitation with emphasis on twenty-five individuals or families. Some of these people were later interviewed to see if they valued the visits. Virtually all of the veterans were engaged in service for their own healing.
