A diagnosis of the problem was given from psychological, emotional, theological, and biblical perspectives.  A theology and methodology was presented showing why that issue was a focus for an act of ministry.  A sermon series was presented dealing with the themes of abandonment, lostness, and hope.  Evaluation was done by a peer group using written-response questionnaires and by the chapel community using scale-type questionnaires. Modern rabbis accept those changes, and attempt to use these new roles to establish their authority in the synagogue and community. Based on extensive interviews with Jewish Theological Seminary-trained congregational rabbis in northern California, the nature of that authority is studied.  The project concludes that rabbis utilize an 'authority of process.' The dissertation probes New Testament material, historical material, and current thinking on ministry, including interviews with fifteen ministers in Churches of Christ, to provide some theological thinking about ministry.  In spite of some lack of clarity, the ministers interviewed showed remarkable agreement that preaching was their defining role. A handbook on apologetics was developed, after which it was then taught to two test groups totaling twenty-four participants.  Using a Likert-type scale, a pretest and posttest were administered to the participants to measure changes in attitude toward witnessing as a consequence of studying the handbook.  The results of the tests indicated that participants' attitude concerning their witnessing improved. The first members of the McClintock Church faced the poverty, prejudice, and persecution which surrounded all ex-slaves in the South as they adjusted to their new political freedom.  Special attention is given to the missionary efforts of the Freedmen's Committee of the Old School Presbyterian Church as it sponsored pastors and teachers in the South. The founding pastor of McClintock Church was the Rev Samuel C Alexander of Shirleysburg, Pennsylvania.
