Biblical texts and images indicate that Christ's presence is the only requirement for an active and alive church. This project, which was aimed at helping members come to this understanding, was a four-part process.  These four groups of experiences were: eleven meetings with project associates that looked at the church, its context, biblical images of the church and development of a theological statement; three congregational experiences; development of a mission statement and goals; and implementation of these goals. Video recordings of faith stories in the local church were made.  This video composite was used as a springboard for encouraging participants to share their faith and begin the corporate story for the local church.  The project includes biblical and theological background for individual and corporate faith development. A sermon series identifying what constitutes active church membership was presented to the congregation; a pretest-posttest opinionnaire was used to determine its effectiveness.  The author developed a model encourager program which included a membership committee and an eight-session encourager training course.  The effectiveness of the course was measured by the experimental method. The purpose of this project was to create a greater awareness of biblically based deacon ministry on the part of the congregation and to equip the deacons to become servant-ministers.  Two methods of research were employed: the experimental method and the descriptive method. With the combination of these two methodologies, the project was successfully accomplished. Through historical research, a thesis was developed that direct mail and telemarketing were suitable methods for prospect identification.  A program was developed to involve church members in mailing letters and making telephone calls to new homeowners and residents who lived within two miles of the church. The historical and descriptive survey methods of research were used to determine the developmental changes of midlife and the prevalent needs of adults experiencing those changes.  Six couples participated in an eight-week training program at First Baptist Church, Clarksville, Tennessee.  At the conclusion of the training, the results were tested by statistical standards and other methods.
