Local churches should be more intentional and effective in their approach to baptismal instruction.  This project involved the development of a program of baptismal instruction, including the development of a baptismal policy by the local church session, the preparation of printed materials and a seminar for parents as well as a sermon series on baptism for the congregation.  The major conclusion reached is that the model of a group seminar can be effective as a teaching device as well as a tool for assimilating people into the congregation. People associated with Mennonite churches in Winnipeg are the focus of this study. The study works with two hypotheses: first, there is domestic violence among Mennonites, and second, that people in abusive situations turn to the church for help. Participants' responses focus on the church's role in empowering older adults to create prophetic, serving, hopeful communities of peers. The research group was a random sampling of eleven American Baptist churches in the San Diego area.  A questionnaire was given to determine the believer's level of participation in, attitude towards, and understanding of the Lord's Supper.  Those in the top twenty percent and bottom twenty percent were given Pittard's Revised Commitment Test. Central to the work is conversion as the goal of confirmation.  The historical and theological development of confirmation is considered, conversion is defined, an ecclesiology is proposed (church as body of Christ, covenant community, and communion of saints) and a pedagogical methodology including child development theory is outlined. The act of ministry and appendices include worship services and sermons based on Cycle A of the lectionary from Lent through Ascension. Initiating the project was a survey of a congregation's perception of faith.  Results of the survey reflected the need of Baptists to address the place of experience after the 'born again' event, a lack of discipline, and the influence others have on an individual's spiritual growth.  At the end of the project a survey was taken that showed Southern Baptists can develop an understanding of spirituality as journey.
