Using original sources, the author shows how a liberal 'vision,' above and beyond the 'modernism' of the times, contributed to an unprecedented level of church growth, individual enthusiasm, and social and political influence.  A significant factor was the large number of women ministers serving in Iowa in positions of power. After thoroughly researching both the doctrine and current preaching methodologies, the author preached a series of three narrative sermons on the doctrine of predestination. Afterwards, a select group was surveyed to determine whether the preacher's objectives were achieved. The method used was to design interventions to test this theory in a particular regional body for several months, after studying the dynamics of volunteerism, biblical teaching, tradition, and current studies in the sociology of groups. Friendship is a minor theme in Scripture and Christian history.  Jesus moves all disciples into friendship in the eschatological advance from servanthood.  The challenge is to reclaim friendship as a symbol of salvation.  In the church's primary activity, its worship, commitment to friendship can satisfy people's need for intimacy and encourage a climate of hospitality. Research shows friendship is a theological expectation in Christian community. The importance of a strategy for growth and the theological perspectives of church growth are examined.  This small church faced major obstacles to growth but at the end of the seven-year period the average number of participants in the worship service grew to 114.
