The thesis is that Christian faith can undermine the power of hopelessness, even in the face of devastating circumstances. The project includes a theology of hope and contrasts the characteristics of hope with those of individualism in contemporary American society.  The theology is actively applied in a series of six hour-and-a-half sessions with senior high youth. The project, working with a confirmation class, tried to provide a youth ministry program that enabled these young people to become active in the church and to grow spiritually.  Chapter one tells how the project began and describes the development of the youth ministry program (First Congregational Church, Greenfield, Mass).  Chapter two looks at the biblical, theological, and theoretical bases of youth ministry. Faith development and biblical themes are examined and definitions of spirituality are explored.  Chapter three evaluates the project and describes the enthusiasm of the congregation for an on-going ministry with youth. This thesis explores biblical, historical and social contexts to show how a meaningful confirmation program endeavors to proclaim Christ to new and succeeding generations.  Its purpose is to challenge church adults to understand their role in the discipleship of their children.  The thesis project shows how a particular congregation studied the issues involved and developed an organizational strategy by which a more meaningful program could be instituted in the life of its church.  This is not only a research project; it is the story of a people who searched for a new understanding, struggled with the issues, and dared change a tradition which was no longer serving the needs of their youth. These trainees in turn will train the congregation to do the same. The research included the history of the Wesley Methodist Church of Ghana (Brooklyn, NY); theology of evangelism; and evangelism and the Ghanaian community.  The project comprised twelve sessions involving: learning, presentation, and role-playing. The focus of attention will be on the Church of God which is the oldest, continuing Pentecostal denomination in the United States.  The premise of this thesis is that a theology of pastoral counseling is found within the Wesleyan tradition by which the Holiness and Pentecostal movements were shaped. It suggests that the MBTI is not a highly regarded instrument psychometrically.  Further that much of the methodology currently employed is largely based upon influence and impression.  Lastly, the Jungian personality theory and method may not be the most desirable theoretical base for correlational studies.  My alternative seeks to observe and quantify purported relationships.  It employs a personality theory based upon factor analysis and the Sixteen Personality Questionnaire (16PF) as a preferred psychometric instrument.  This dissertation is largely a response to earlier work done by Michael and Norrisey.  It is a critique of Jungian typology and the MBTI.
