A phone interview with fifty of the most recently hospitalized church members revealed a need for deacon visitation.  A survey of the deacons indicated that a majority desired to be better equipped for hospital visitation.  The training utilized the clinical pastoral education model including: seminars, case conferences, interpersonal relationship groups, and personal supervision. Literary research was used to develop biblical and theological bases for recognition and development of existing leadership in the church by the pastor.  Social research was the primary consideration of the project, measuring and evaluating leadership response. Four students from Furman University participated.  The project design utilized a pre and postassessment of the students with a focused interview and three tests: the Theological School Inventory, Pastoral Counseling Response Scale, and Semantic Differential.  A didactic series on the minister as servant-shepherd was presented.  The students participated in reflection and supervision of visitation. The students developed greater awareness of themselves and ministry. Surveys, questionnaires, and reporting forms were used to draw conclusions in both the church and the community. Chapter 2 gives the biblical and theological bases for Christian stewardship and chapter 4 contains sermons and other teaching materials implemented in the training program.  Chapters 3 and 5 include the summaries and evaluations of group discussions and the questionnaire instrument. The resulting model is of a school with a strong emphasis upon cross-cultual training in the regular curriculum, on-campus short courses, and external seminars.
