The project explored the need for such training and the reasons for the high rate of alcoholism and the growing number of suicides.  It discovered that the Cherokee pastor is the key to helping his people.  The author examined the biblical background for crisis counseling with alcoholic and suicidal persons and laid a theoretical foundation to equip pastors to minister to such persons.  The major emphasis of the project was the procedures used in selecting and training a core group of pastors in strategic areas of the Cherokee Nation.  The team concentrated on three major areas of concern in their preparation for enlarged Christian ministry. Storytelling workshops were conducted in which the participants learned biblical stories, reflected theologically about those stories and related the stories to their personal lives. It concentrated on the way situations of conflict are handled within those relationships.  A context was created in which four family groups could examine their relationship and analyze their interactions and the effect their behavior had on family life. Participants engaged in a variety of experiences over seven sessions while using such analytical tools as the Thomas-Kihlmann Conflict Mode instrument. The hypothesis was that youth perceptions of a local congregation will change measurably if personal needs assessment, coordination of youth activities and establishment of a central youth forum are undertaken by the leadership on behalf of young people.  The project involved five distinct methods: 1) a needs assessment, 2) the recruiting of volunteers, 3) the preparation of the volunteers for ministry, 4) the development of a youth council, 5) an evaluation of effectiveness.  Pre- and post-project evaluation showed that youth perceptions of the parish became more 'positive'. Evangelism is discussed from the two perspectives of General Evangelism and In-House Evangelism.  General Evangelism concentrates on witnessing to persons who are not members of a particular Christian religious body and to persons who have not accepted Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour. In-House Evangelism focuses on involving persons of the local church in the total life of the church.  Evangelism in prisons and hospitals is also discussed.  The project emphasizes the personal preparation of the individual evangelist in terms of mental stability and spiritual strength.  The project is evaluated from the three perspectives of the participants, the class leaders in the church and the DMin candidate. Its hypothesis is that merging local churches is a viable alternative to closing them.  To test this hypothesis, the author reviews related literature, conducts a parish survey, interviews four lay leaders and examines financial records, worship attendance and membership reports before and after the merger.  The findings confirm the hypothesis.
