After studying the training of elders as described in the New Testament, tracing the history of theological education in the United States, and conducting case studies of some contemporary church-centered training programs, the author concluded that it is feasible for local churches to train pastors.  The hypothesis was tested in a training program conducted by the author at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon.  Five students were trained in hermeneutics and homiletics over a six-month period. The sermon was seen as a literary art form and focused on elements like the use of story, metaphor, evocative symbol, and mythic language.  It used a questionnaire to examine the responses people make to sermons. The project examined theological presuppositions, descriptions of each enrichment program, evaluations of the results of each program, and many of the sources for marriage enrichment.  The theological presuppositions came out of the examination of selected scriptures, and how Baptists have hisorically interpreted those in their statements of faith.  The evaluation compared the scores of a pre-session and post-session 'marital communication inventory'.  These scores indicated areas of improvement in communication.
