The research method was active listening and observing, then recording parishioiners' subjective spiritual concerns.  Data was accumulated over ten years. A six-week Lenten series of sermons, workshops and model meditative prayers provide a broad approach to an entire congregation.  The project report contains scriptural and theological support. With the aid of A church planning questionnaire by Grayson L Tucker Jr, and added questions developed from the research, the writer measures his church against that of the rapidly growing new churches of the first three centuries.  Areas of similarity and weakness were identified. The research assesses the data collected in case studies from three years of pastoral counseling.  The results show a number of differences in the role identity, in the depth or level of counseling and in the approach of the pastoral therapist. The author's experience during twenty-five years of ministry indicated a serious lack of knowledge by persons serving in that office; therefore, a biblical and historical study of the office of elder was made.  When the study was concluded, the material became part of a course of study designed for elders and deacons-elect in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
