A study manual was developed as a compendium of ecclesiological research.  Organized under the heads Failure, Foundation, Focus, Form and Function, it comprised 30 theses or statements for discussion with supporting material.  Bible reference sheets were also developed.  The manual was used in a weekend retreat with a small group of church lay leaders. Pre- and post-retreat testing indicated considerable improvement in participants' understanding of the nature and mission of the church. The chaplains experience a sense of frustration when church structures are not responsive to their desire to maintain active involvement.
