The writer conducted personal interviews with fifteen church members from five different congregations of the Presbyterian Church, USA, and their senior or solo pastors.  Selected churches were of various sizes and demographic situations. This was a study of twenty people who were divided into two groups.  The one group received eight lessons concerning process thought; the second group did not receive the lessons.  All twenty persons kept daily journals to record insights and feelings about God, self, and the world; all participants prayed daily for fifteen minutes during a period of eight weeks. A survey questionnaire addressing the issue of pastoral presence was administered personally to 101 randomly chosen ministers of the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference.  Twenty-two of this group were given further opportunity of an oral response in an open interview.  Positive and negative trait patterns were identified by these pastors. Much of this results from an imbalance in ministerial style.  The traditional style of ministry has an excessive analytical, logical approach.  What is needed is a balancing of this approach with an intuitive, relational, in-depth type of awareness.  Ministry which involves a balanced awareness has many implications. Application can take place in sermon preparation, worship experiences, pastoral care, and organnizational planning. Meditative experiences are especially congruent for encouraging a balance. It reviews the history and theology of the diaconate as the living symbol of the servant nature of the Christian Church.  The project uses andragogical principles of education in a series of monthly workshops.  The project shows that this model has potential as an effective method of training. The results of this study are incorporated in further theological reflection.  The concluding chapter outlines a proposed model for future church relations programs.  This model consists of seven foundational principles and five practical suggestions. Taking seriously both the delphi study and the Lutheran doctrine of the two kingdoms, the model challenges the agency to engage in church relations as a theological task which requires political strategy. The report covers a period of one year.  Reflections are presented for each monthly session. Approximately twenty persons attended each meeting.  The project reflects theologically and psychologically on the issues of death, mourning, widowhood and God's will in people's lives.  The report examines these topics scripturally and historically.
