Twelve persons explored literature, music, drama, and paintings using Tillich's theological categories of understanding to discuss and interpret religious meanings found in these art forms.  This study indicates that persons can find greater religious meaning in the arts when using a clearly defined theological approach which affirms the integrity of the arts and encourages critical theological and artistic analysis. A profile of contemporary expectations is available through international research reported in Ministry in America (1980).  Research among Mid-American Baptists by the author corroborates the international results. Local church teachers participated in an individual and group reflection process  based on Thomas Groome's 'shared praxis' approach.  Pre- and post-process measurements indicated an increase in the teachers' valuing of their own faith experience, satisfaction in teaching and sense of purpose of teaching.
