An urgent need arises to make a shift from oppressive education of the Bible to a liberating process of common learning. Appropriate training in this dimension of ministry will help them to relate better to parishioners on a variety of levels, to mainain objectivity as counselors and to avoid pitfalls in their counseling ministry.  One forum where pastoral counselng can be very helpful is the Roman Catholic Catechumenate, reinstituted by the Second Vatican Council. This present study describes the manner in which such a program was designed and executed in a local parish. This church's often troubled life has been a remarkable microcosm of wider currents in American church history.  This study traces these currents from 1825-1975 with particular reference to the relationship between 'evangelical faith' and 'social concern'.  Primary documents available are the official records and writings of its ten ministers over 150 years. Personal faith and active social reform characterized many evangelical churches in the 19th century.  The fundamentalist-modernist controversy has characterized the 20th century and continues to hamper the unity and mission of the church. While there are new possibilities for reconciliation between 'personal faith' and 'social gospel' among conservative and liberal Christians, particularly with the emergence of the 'new evangelicals' of the 1970s, some issues, especially biblical understanding and authority, indicate continued tensions. Primary is the need to increase the leader's understanding and awareness of the later years, to be more aware of program models, and to organize and evaluate programs.  Through the use of a survey research model 300 leaders with various experience levels completed a questionnaire testing this hypothesis.  The results are evaluated positively in terms of the response and through theological reflection. Methodology included reviewing relevant literature, forwarding a questionnaire to all clergy in one area of Australia and interviewing some respondents.  The two sections of the resultant handbook cover: 1) the dynamics of grief and ministry in light of these dynamics and 2) resource material for funerals. Workshop materials were predicated on theological, psychological and communication principles.  Couples, attending workshops in four churches, prepared communication goals on a graded scale to achieve in three months. Sixteen of twenty-one couples returned the scales to me.  I processed and interpreted the results. Forty subjects, mean age 65.85 years, 20 left and 20 right hemisphere stroke-damaged were administered the Religious Inventory Questionnaire (RIQ, Harsch, 1980) to assess feelings about self, God and communicating with God; and the MMPI to assess psychological pathology.  The results indicated that the left hemisphere damaged patients were consistently more negative than right hemisphere damaged patients on all three levels of the RIQ, however, without pathological levels.
