This model has survived in the church long after its demise in western culture. A new model, 'servant leadership,' is more appropriate in the church at the turn of the twenty-first century. From servant leadership a model of servant preaching can be developed. Servant preaching reflects a contemporary homiletic that emphasizes partnership between preacher and congregation, and fosters a relationship of trust in which a preacher's leadership is established. The model of partnership between preacher and people is built on the author's experience with the Parish Project Group, in dialogue with the work of four homileticians."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127857274028032,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:50:34.881Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:33:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"78b733c7-8c31-4d3c-bf2a-673f630e07f1","accessControl_ssim":["7977411b-d428-4d21-9a17-bcdae9274f91"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Beating the odds: successfully following a long-term pastor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:40:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["467c91bf-4a99-4d4e-bf26-b51820563ecd"],"hasLease_ssim":["911c3679-77fb-47db-b99c-cc2e2dd0e871"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen A Seamands"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard A Danielson"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Interpersonal relations","Clergy","Laity","Clergy--Tenure","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to identify the factors considered dominanct in successful and unsuccessful pastoral transitions by pastors who have followed a long-term predecessor. This study sought to gather information on successful and unsuccessful transitions by focusing on three participants in each transition: the predecessor, the successor, and the congregation. Twenty pastors from the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church were chosen to be interviewed based on meeting the following criteria: 1) full-time pastors appointed at some point in their vocation to succeed a pastor who had served the congregation for nine years or more; 2) for those currently serving in that position, a minimum tenure of two years was required; and 3) for those not currently serving in that position, the term of service needed to have ended within the past five years. Data analysis was based on the transcripts of those interviews. In regard to the three participants in pastoral transitions the major findings included: 1) the choices the predecessor made in relating to the congregation and supporting the new pastor were more important than whether he or she remained in the church and community; 2) a healthy process of grieving and letting go of the predecessor was critical if the congregation was to welcome and follow the new pastor; 3) the incoming pastor's ability to understand the congregation and exert appropriate leadership was essential in each transition. The increasing length of pastorates in the United Methodist Church requires attention to the dynamics of succession following long-term pastorates. This study concludes that more transitions can be successful with the provision of appropriate training that focuses on practical matters and issues of character."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134344002142208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:33:41.108Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:39:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0625367-7996-497b-a000-f7122305d190","accessControl_ssim":["75b2e721-8b0a-481e-8fde-3ab3ea8d736f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching for a whole-person response in developing a healthy church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:33:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["723c8168-279b-4628-a984-f145abc58f9d"],"hasLease_ssim":["fbee98b9-a2e2-4862-9ba7-8e15b96bf0ac"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anthony Headley"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John M Crowe"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In contrast to some, this study sought to present a thoroughly consistent and genuine integration of ecclesiology and systems theory in addressing the subject of church health. Results showed that when reconnected with Wesley's original vision through this experiential process, participants became much more open to exploring and implementing new models of ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128208557473792,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:56:09.892Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:38:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c6f77619-0464-4b0f-bad6-63f4f97416e7","accessControl_ssim":["1fc65b17-afff-40f4-8781-b6e82422c2f4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Church renewal for Kentucky United Methodism? evaluating the Purpose-Driven Church [registered trade mark symbol] Network Pilot"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:51:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:50:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3900caf2-2c86-4aa7-81b1-67cd1804fc42"],"hasLease_ssim":["3b3986e4-6936-4af0-84dc-bf688bfde4ca"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Thomas Tumblin"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James C Wafford"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal--Methodist Church","United Methodist Church--Annual conferences"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Concerned that established churches do not transition to new models of ministry easily, the Kentucky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church partnered with Saddleback Community Church to form the Purpose-Driven Church [registered trade mark symbol] Network Pilot.
