Without sufficient care of self, therapists risk burn out, empathy overload, and an inability to continue in the profession. A particular problem exists for marriage and family therapy interns balancing academic studies, clinical practice and personal lives. This project explores intern therapist engagement in creative activities as a form of self-care and stress reduction. While self-report scales reflect the benefit of creative activities for self-care, more study is needed. The participants engaged in practical service for a period of six months. The goal was to discover any change in how they applied their understanding of their calling through service opportunities. One of the lessons that emerged is that the church needs to be nurtured by missional habits. The project consisted of researching assorted beliefs and practices concerning spiritual warfare in a variety of Christian traditions, then writing a text which integrated the practices into a single model. The resulting resource was evaluated by a panel of experts from a broad range of Christian traditions. The program aims to measure quantitatively the increase of their satisfaction and commitment to their relationship over a period of five months. A total of two hundred participants will be included. The outcome over time will be determined through a statistical comparison of pre-seminar data versus post-seminar data from the couples. A primary objective was to embody sacred presence in the community. Another objective was to discover principles, practices, language, and metrics for the ministry of presence. The project was rooted in the practices of table fellowship, spiritual formation, and engagement with the Other through invitational conversation, acts of charity, and hospitality. Using qualitative research methosd the researcher demonstrated that the best practices found among secular organizations in pursuing diversity are effective when implemented in a large predominately white church. Field research consisted of surveys, focus groups, and interviews in three congregations. Research focused on the barriers and incentives to assuming a leadership role, characteristics of leaders, models for structuring leadership, and equipping the congregations to participate in leadership. The research showed the largest factor in engaging leadership is a personal invitation by a respected leader. This direct appeal counteracts a common fear of not being qualified.
