She surveyed literature that addressed the different genres of biblical literature, imaginative biblical literature and preaching, and the specific genre of biblical apocalypse. Much damage is done to the cause of Christ by internal conflict over authority and submission issues, especially in the North American Protestant sending faith mission boards. This thesis seeks to lay out a beginning working biblical theology of followership. Its conclusion is that Christian believers are called more to followership than leadership and a proper understanding of submission and obedience can aid greatly in the worldwide spread of the gospel. The thesis argues that the development and implementation of a biblical theology of submission and obedience will result in healthier, more sustaining, and effective missionaries and ministries. To illustrate such a statement, it will look at the early Society of Jesus under St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Moravian Brethren at Herrnhut under Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf. Each will be explored as to their history, missionary movement and effectiveness, early documents, and spiritual practices. This paper will examine the challenges the church currently faces in reaching out to Hindu background believers (HBBs) and suggest means through which the church can improve its efforts at evangelization, by taking greater note of the Hindu religious milieu and exercising greater cultural sensitivity. It will examine how the problem of differing social norms that have emerged between Hindus and Christians can be overcome and how certain tenets of Hinduism can be adopted as a way of accurately conveying the gospel while others will have to be revised or discarded for evangelism to be effective. The wider context of evangelism in Malabar is studied through a literature review, visits to the area and interviews with those who are in active ministry in Malabar. The author used a questionnaire to gain information from HBBs in Malabar. It relates the journey of an established white congregation reaching out to its diverse neighbors with Christ's love and bringing them into its fellowship. It describes five phases during those 10 years, each with its respective challenges and breakthroughs. To weigh its allegiance to Scripture and its effectiveness in current practice, this study overviews what is currently happening in church decision-making, and analyses how decisions were taken 'by discernment' in Scripture. It also examines discernment in church history. Case-study interviews and a field study examination of the Morris/Olsen method are included. These challenges can include financial and health concerns, future living arrangements, final wishes, and discovering the ultimate value of one's own life. Tragically, however, widows, widowers, the never-married and divorcees are often left to contend with such issues alone. Meanwhile they may have adult children who will also be deeply affected by these issues, and are able to help. But that help rarely comes. Instead silence, ignorance, and misunderstanding prevail between the generations regarding the realities that will impact them both. This project is an examination of these issues and the reasons that prevent aging parents and their adult children from discussing them constructively. This author solicited from each participant the biblical role models, the literature, and the people that have most greatly influenced them as a pastoral leader.
