Dealing with the needs of commuter households, determining ways to enable them to participate meaningfully in the life and ministry of the church, and facilitating the transformation of a commuter church into an outward focused, community-anchored church are adaptive problems. Intrapersonal intelligence is active self-awareness: the capacity to learn and adapt to the factors of one's own reality. A reflection-in-action (Schön) method evolved built on Argyris' double-loop learning using the work of Bowen, Friedman, and Steinke. The outcome is increased non-anxious ordained leadership capacity through change and development in leadership style and skills. This study examined a system for resuscitating and healing churches that have suffered trauma. The hypothesis is that empathy, justice-mindedness, and humility, partnership with the Godhead, and koinonia, are the prescription for resuscitating and healing a church that has been traumatized. A qualitative methodology was employed utilizing surveys, interviews, and observations. This study utilized semi-structured interviews with twelve pastors in the Reformed Church in America focusing on leadership skills and transition, power and authority dynamics, and staff relations. The study revealed that the transition from solo to senior pastorate affects personal and professional aspects of the pastor's life. This study examines this dilemma in the practice of pastors in the Westminster Tradition. The pastoral practice has sought to define what it means to partake of the Supper in a worthy manner, and pastors have urged their parishioners to examine themselves for the presence of gospel knowledge, faith, repentance and love, or new obedience. Meanwhile, a minority tradition existed which frowned on self-examination and focused instead on those who had a covenantal right to the Supper as defined by baptism and church membership. The 'fencing' tradition is an endangered species today. Postmodern authors have noted a significant change in Western culture, affecting world view and specifically denying the existence of an over-arching explanation of reality known as metanarrative. This study employed a qualitative research design interviewing twelve Teaching Elders of the PCA. The findings revealed a strong commitment to the Reformed value that scripture alone is sufficient as a source for the content of sermons.
