Using focus groups and theological reflection, the project explores these connections while using Matthew's boat stories to illustrate characteristics of engaged ministry. The project tested that in making these connections, a congregation became more aware of the stories of the 'other' by connecting with the stories of people, enabling a willingness to become more involved with engaged ministry. Pastors need to integrate preaching into their own Christian discipleship in order for preaching to have an impact on their congregation. Through this project I propose that preaching can enhance the Christian discipleship of the pastor through the use of Incarnational Exegesis, EPIC, Authentic and Integrated Preaching. Pastors in two districts of the United Methodist Church were surveyed with follow-up interviews regarding their perceptions and practices around duties listed under 'order' in The United Methodist Book of Discipline. Comparisons and contrasts in thinking are identified between ordained and non-ordained clergy. How can communities of faith offer sanctuary to those yearning for it? Learning from monastic communities that help connect individual lives with the Divine by keeping the seven hours, and mingling work and prayer, this project explored the possibility that a modern, accessible retreat could help participants reconnect body, mind, and spirit. In a one-day retreat in an Anglican Cathedral setting, 42 participants, ranging in age from 7 to 86, loosely kept the seven hours and engaged in creative activities: self-directed art projects, needlework, labyrinth walking, illuminating letters, baking, gardening and making rosaries. Participants rated their levels of peacefulness upon arrival and departure, and explored the areas where they had experienced stress during the day, and what they felt led them to a deeper peace. Contained encounters with stress helped participants move to deeper levels of internal peacefulness, as did support and feedback provided through the structure and experience of the event. ILDP was constructed on research findings of the Ten-year Church Development Project of the church, evaluation of the leadership, and knowledge learned through D.Min. course work. The program was offered in three-week retreats focusing on spiritual formation, discipleship and stewardship, and church administration. Pre and post-tests of the three sessions assessed the increase in knowledge and effectiveness of leadership. Seven congregants participated in a six-week Bible study on God's will for divine health with a focus on God's goodness. Each session included prayer, worship, lecture, discussion, and reflective journaling. Interviews, surveys, field notes, and journaling validated the qualitative case studies. Results indicate obstacles were identified, and four out of six participants that identified obstacles chose to begin the process of overcoming those obstacles.
