The response to the cry for justice which the denomination answered with its founding has been overshadowed by members’ individual pursuits of personal piety. Smith-Sloan"],"subject_tesim":["Christian life","Spiritual life","Christian education","African Americans--Religion"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This ethnographic study explored how five, Black, Christian, female public school educators – three teachers, one counselor, and one administrator – practiced principles of Christian faith and exemplified acts of faith in ways that positively affected and impacted their work environment, their students, parents, and peers while remaining cognizant of ethics that give inference to the separation of church and state in public education. The roots of the problem lie in the cultural, theological, and practical inability to reach behaviorally challenged children and youth who have been traumatized by ACEs. This injurious practice ends up impeding the participation of lower-tier churches and hinders the building of authentic Christ-like relationships.  This project intends to introduce gospel hospitality as a spiritual value that invites all clergy and lay leaders to the table of relationships as equal advocates. The researcher used constructive narrative theology to collect and interpret the data that was generated through the project. Reaching the younger generations will require a more personal approach than new programs and events. Overcoming skepticism and distrust are key factors in reaching the younger generations. The Five Thresholds Model will increase the confidence of young adults in the overall practice of evangelizing and, more specifically, in the practices of sharing their faith and inviting others to respond. This spiritual intervention addressed the often unspoken concerns of this population. Understanding spirituality, while managing the many facets of SCD, is vital for holistic health. Participants found themselves at critical junctures in their spiritual development - seeking, exploring, even questioning - how spirituality plays a role in their overall well-being. The project collected both qualitative and quantitative data through a chaplain interventionist. The chaplain met 1:1 with participants to share strategies for increasing everyday coping and self-efficacy. The participants found spiritual care to be necessary and helpful as they navigated their daily lives and sickle cell disease.
