Easily neglected or denied, the repressed shadow is then capable of actuating the split-off inferior, unattractive, too frequently feminine, side of psyche in such phenomenological forms as projection and scapegoating. Raising the unconscious to the conscious level is not viewed as optional, but mandatory.  Two parish church case studies of conflict support the project's thesis, as well as a chapter devoted to the ontology of evil. Psychologically, the trinitarian image of God is found to be inadequate.  God's nature is more completely symbolized within the quaternity. The beginning point of the study is the psychological and spiritual suffering of the alienated psyche in the archetypal wasteland, a painful condition in which the individual feels separated and alienated from his or her own unconscious depths, from other people in human community, and from a seemingly destructive and unavailable God.  This archetypal experience is viewed as the a priori condition for the healing of psyche and soul, a transformation which occurs through the establishment of a redeeming link with an infinite source of wisdom, guidance and blessing called, variously, the self-archetype or the greater personality in psychological language, or the mysterium tremendum or wholly other in theological language.
