Based on evidence that catechists lack formation in best practices of preaching, the researcher designed and implemented an educational initiative in a multi-site, multi-participant intensive formation program. The researcher used a homiletic grounded in the Paschal Mystery, which located God’s gratuitous and gracious actions on humanity’s behalf as the focus of preaching—giving gospel-power—to any form of preaching carried out during the study.Within a unique form of pastoral ministry called the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS), employing a qualitative methodology, a constructivist epistemology, and a field-based action research design, the researcher effectively utilized various educational approaches to develop and assess participant competence in preaching using a comprehensive assessment program, and iteratively improving their learning and teaching preaching praxis using program evaluation tools. The research shows that the curriculum successfully demonstrated that the comprehensive preaching model, which integrated five best practices of preaching for proclaiming the Word with children into the study’s conceptual framework, worked to develop the competence of catechists as preachers of the Good News. The potential for all the baptized to fully embrace their already-God-given giftedness, is something not yet fully conceived. By briefly presenting the experience of mysticism through historical interpretation, acknowledging contemporary spiritual authors and gathering current spiritual experience of ‘ordinary’ people, the stage is set to introduce Karl Rahner’s notion of everyday mysticism. From there it seeks to determine the reasons this group of believers give for absenteeism and thereafter to respond biblically and pastorally to those reasons. The thesis is about developing Mandarin ministry in the Chinese Alliance Churches of Australia. It is to plant a mandarin speaking congregation in a Chinese church using the resources from both Cantonese congregations and second-generation English congregation. Using interviews with churches that have existing Mandarin ministry with mainland Chinese, the author researched and examined the contributing factors to an effective strategy to develop Mandarin ministry. The dissertation section of the study examines the Lukan perspective of Jesus' mission and ministry, the development of the Baptist movement with particular regard to the contribution by Spurgeon, Carey and Graham and the process of secularization with particular regard to the myth of the Australian secular society.  The project section examines in detail the growth and decline of twenty Baptist churches in the urban environment of Australia's largest industrial city.  The study revealed that personal religious belief in Australia remains strong but attachment to institutional religious bodies is in decline. Examination of the twenty Newcastle Baptist churches revealed that the majority of growth was borrowed from other churches with little evidence of growth as a result of mission activity.
