Using the story of Jacob wrestling with God in Genesis 32:22-31 as a backdrop against which we might view suicide in more compassionate ways, the author brings our attention to the graciousness of the Divine in matters of complexity, where there is grayness and a shadow side.  This is a phenomenological study that explores the concepts of 'blessing' and 'wound' - what it is like to live with 'both/and,' rather than overcoming, as Jacob needed to learn to live with both a blessing and a wound. Research data was gathered through personal interviews from six participants who were enrolled in an independent secondary school where participation in community service was a requirement for all students.  The literature review includes research learning theories as well as a theological framework of service. A subtext for the study is wrestling with the question, 'What does it mean to be faithful as a Christian preacher in this time and culture?'  A critical review of the purposes of preaching is offered and a series of commonly held expectations or intentions of Christian preaching are clarified.  Using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the preacher/researcher engages seven mainline Protestant preachers in an intensive six-week study of their lived experience of being a preacher in an Easter season.  This study helps broaden our understanding of what it means to be a preacher in an Easter season, the praxis of preaching and dynamics at work in being a preacher. The author introduces the reader to the impact litigation has on the United Church by illustrating his own struggle with litigation while serving as a Chairperson of presbytery. He then offers an overview of ecclesiastical and civil legal process prior to exploring the research participant's stories of church litigation. These stories serve as a basis for the development of a theology of suffering and compassion to address church litigation. From 300 pages of verbatim transcripts of these meetings, six themes emerge: loss, longing, search, journey, connection, new life.
