In addition to a supportive process the project sought to address the spiritual dimensions of the cancer experience.  Three models for reflection were tested: Jesus' Paschal Mystery, the religious practice of pilgrimage and the stations of the cross.  Using surveys, as well as discussion and observation over six weeks, data show an improvement in how the women saw their experience. After the Council, a new phenomenon emerged of paid ministerial positions. The US bishops developed a theological framework for this phenomenon and named it lay ecclesial ministry. This project examines the developing theological understanding of lay ecclesial ministry, with focus on the human resource issues that surfaced with the emergence of the role of pastoral associate. As a result, there has been an increase in the number of volunteers who perform ministerial roles once reserved to religious professionals. These volunteers often have not received the spiritual formation of their professional predecessors. Drawing from the U.S.C.C.B. document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, the author has created a program of spiritual formation for parish lay volunteers. With insights from this review and an exploration of pedagogical methods, a mystagogy of the Sacrament of Penance was designed and shared with a group of adult Catholics. Using scripture, personal reminiscence, theological reflection, and story telling, the senior was empowered to engage through discussion a retelling of each of the five stories God meeting people. The seniors were surveyed on the first and last week. One hundred health care workers were presented with twenty-two cases requiring both an action decision and a value justification for the action.  This test was given pre and post a six-week course in perinatal management.
