People from both realms frequently align Christianity with a deontological system of ethics. However, such a system of duty ethics often leads to a self-righteous legalism both groups would oppose. The locus of scripture is not to teach believers to do, but rather to become and the doing will follow. The paper interacts with the teachings of Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas to establish both an historical and theological basis for virtue ethics. The church departed her normal practice of virtue theory and replaced it with deontology. It is time for the church to recover the biblical system of virtue ethics. Deontology is not set aside, but used as a guide for assessing the virtues required. Believers must especially cultivate the virtues of faith, hope and love in order to recover the reputation of the Church as a holy and reliable institution that can point the world to the One True God. When congregants aspire to become virtuous Christians, then the church will be able to recover her identity as the holy institution of God in the eyes of the world. Preaching, teaching and mentoring must lead believers to understand what they must become, and then what they do will be the fruit of that being."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132995676012544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:12:15.243Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:11:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:43:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"070bb78f-cb9b-4487-a221-84f52017c8a0","accessControl_ssim":["cafb78c1-1a03-4e86-b070-59efaee94a83"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Friendship and self giving: the practices of grace"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:11:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:19:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8db946af-8716-4d8c-9d1f-e6639bd7705c"],"hasLease_ssim":["c233c31e-7ddb-4bad-adbf-5e55f2938e5f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles L Campbell"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["D Andrew Richardson"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Aristotle","Friendship","Thomas, Aquinas, Saint, 1225?-1274","Spiritual life--Christianity","Augustine, of Hippo, Saint, 354-430"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores the necessity of friendship for the life of faith and proposes concrete ways that Christians can practice friendship in their communal life. Aristotle's science of literature, called Poetics, is a strategy for reading and interpreting scripture and for preaching that creates an encounter with God during which the people experience themselves as claimed by God for life in God's Kingdom.  The strategy identifies ways the drama of scripture imitates life through plot, language, characters, and reason. Through the faculty of imagination, the preacher interprets scripture using these poetic elements and transports the same into the sermon.  The congregants enter into the drama both of scripture and sermon, locating themselves in the plot, identifying with the characters, and experiencing new alternatives for life as Christian disciples."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127702611165184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:48:07.384Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"D Andrew Richardson","hits":1,"label":"D Andrew Richardson"},{"value":"James J Wilson","hits":1,"label":"James J Wilson"},{"value":"Thomas L Griffis","hits":1,"label":"Thomas L Griffis"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Aristotle","hits":3,"label":"Aristotle"},{"value":"Augustine, of Hippo, Saint, 354-430","hits":2,"label":"Augustine, of Hippo, Saint, 354-430"},{"value":"Thomas, Aquinas, Saint, 1225?-1274","hits":2,"label":"Thomas, Aquinas, Saint, 1225?-1274"},{"value":"Bible--Criticism, interpretation","hits":1,"label":"Bible--Criticism, interpretation"},{"value":"Bible--Ethics","hits":1,"label":"Bible--Ethics"},{"value":"Christian ethics","hits":1,"label":"Christian ethics"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":3,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":2,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":3,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2004","hits":1,"label":"2004"},{"value":"2007","hits":1,"label":"2007"},{"value":"2017","hits":1,"label":"2017"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":2,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":2,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":3,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":3,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
