The drop produces progressive distancing from the rootedness of Christianity, a propensity to become secularized, and the loss of relationships that formed these youth as children. This paper studies whether there is a connection between the way churches understand and prepare for Confirmation and possible reduction in attendance after it. The hypothesis was:  Effective incorporation and nurture of early adolescents in the Christian initiation process, particularly through preparation for Confirmation, is dependent upon a structured and active involvement on the part of the parents and godparents/sponsors in the faith community of the local parish.  A confirmation program was designed for 6th-graders and their parents.  Two tracks, one for the 6th-graders and one for the parents, ran concurrently during an eight-month period. Instructional foundations are provided in scripture and the services and catechism of the Episcopal Book of common prayer and with simultaneous and extensive use of mentoring relationships and hands-on participation in outreach and service activities.
