The project began with research into essential servant leadership skills. A curriculum was developed from this research. The project director presented the curriculum in four two-hour training sessions over consecutive Sunday evenings at First Baptist Church. In the first session, the director explored the meaning of servant leadership. In session two, he examined Old and New Testament models of servant leadership. In session three, the project director equipped the participants in the specific servant leadership ministries of encouragement and peacemaking. The project director studied selected scriptures and biblical role models including (but not limited to) specific aspects of the ministries of Paul and Barnabas. In addition, the project director explored selected models and methods of encouragement used in ministry settings. The project director also explored selected aspects from the field of positive psychology. The findings of the research dictated the contents of the lessons. Research on the life of Christ and other materials on encouragement resulted in a manual consisting of five subjects pertaining to encouragement.  One of the goals was to obtain an understanding of encouragement that goes beyond the general idea of simply being positive or affirming.
