Disparity exists between expectations and experiences of the laity regarding preaching.  There is discrepancy between the preachers' beliefs regarding their preaching, and how it is received. It proposes a scriptural hermeneutical method founded on John Wesley's sermon construct in using the preaching moment of the worship service to teach this 'love and demand' construct as a method to interpret Scripture.  The method was successful in teaching Wesley's preaching construct as a scriptural interpretive model.  The evaluation demonstrated that hearers in the focus group learned to identify the love and demand of God in the text. Laypersons shared their story personally or through the pastor. The stories were shared using video or live as a cohesive introduction binding the sermon together.  Evaluation of the model was based upon a congregational survey, a personal and a group interview with those sharing. One of the chief values of history is entertainment.  It is fascinating to learn about the people of the past.  We enjoy listening, seeing and reading about what happened in the past.  It is my hope that people who read this thesis will be captivated by the story of the lives of the early circuit riders.  History can also be the source of inspiration.  As we learn more about those who created the heritage of which we are heirs, we may be inspired to give thanks for their lives, and we may pledge to follow their example.  We know that history's real importance is that it helps us understand who we are.  It is a clue to our own identity.  By reflecting on the past, we can better understand who we are and determine who the future direction of our ministry. This thesis will be a resource in teaching students in confirmation classes and to groups in the church who need to know about their rich United Methodist Heritage.
