In this dissertation the author surveyed and interviewed missionaries to determine what spiritual disciplines most helped them stay effective in their ministry. The results of this research point out certain spiritual disciplines which missionaries use to remain spiritually healthy-prayer, engaging Scripture, worship, fellowship, and service.  Other disciplines were done to a lesser extent.  There was also recognition by the missionaries that workload, busyness, one's environment, and cross-cultural living impacted the effective practice of those disciplines. This study explored how disciples of Jesus Christ from upper-caste Hindu and Jain Gujarati backgrounds (outside India) perceive their experiences of opposition from family and community/caste, resulting in alienation, during the time they were being evangelized. Research combined interviews of Gujarati believers (from the UK and Africa) with interviews of two missionaries. Believers reported receiving little guidance for discussing their journey with family members. Negative reactions came when individuals professed faith in Christ. Intense relational breakdown was short-lived. The history of the Perspectives course is recounted, focusing on the cultural and missiological environment that influenced the course. An annotated bibliography covers the history of the evangelization of various regions of the world. The author created a guide for Perspectives program developers to aid them in adapting the historical section into their particular cultural contexts. Scripture and contemporary literature on the subject were studied, then a qualitative study collected and analyzed data from short missions done through the Village Church, Racho Santa Fe.  The data was analyzed by examining it through coding in order to derive a grounded theory of the phenomenon of short-term missions. For those of us rooted in the Christian tradition, following Christ means offering mercy and kindness to others. It means seeking to understand the world around us so as to recognize the places where God longs to be made known. A transformative potential lies within all short-term mission and service-learning events. To tap that potential we must listen to the wise voices of those have served before us and to the Holy Spirit that leads us into transformative relationships. This project explores the works of several researchers and scholars who identify the potential outcomes of service-learning and short-term mission, and those interested in the transformational effects of such experiences. He led through a noteworthy paradigm shift in which the IMB grew to embrace local churches to address the Great Commission task together. The transition was not without the investment of significant leadership marked by vision, focus, and passion. The IMB transitioned in 2009 from a purely sending entity to a connecting entity. Rankin's story revealed significant conclusions and recommendations, including leadership lessons.
